Upslope Failure Mechanisms and Criteria in Submarine Landslides: Shear Band Propagation, Slab Failure and Retrogression

چکیده

The volume of a submarine landslide is likely to be amplified by shear band propagation along basal surface or spreading failure extension in the sliding layer. Although mechanism translational landslides has been understood using interpretation propagation, assessment limits extension, either through retrogressive spreading, remains challenge due diversity post mechanisms. paper aims explore all possibilities and quantify initiation accordingly, focusing on upslope conditions. different mechanisms are explored with aid large deformation finite element modeling. Original criteria for scarp position, length at slab failure, retrogression conditions ultimate proposed, following process zone approach considering force equilibrium mass. Simplified analytical predictions shown agree well numerical observations. findings presented study expected help assess scale landslides, which important determining geohazard zonation landslides.

Mesh-free Galerkin simulations of dynamic shear band propagation and failure mode transition

A mesh-free Galerkin simulation of dynamic shear band propagation in an impact-loaded pre-notched plate is carried out in both two and three dimensions. The related experimental work was initially reported by Kalthoff and Winkler (1987), and later re-examined by Zhou et al. (1996a,b), and others. The main contributions of this numerical simulation are as follows: (1) The ductile-to-brittle fail...

On criteria for dynamic adiabatic shear band propagation

In this work, we postulate the physical criterion for dynamic shear band propagation, and based on this assumption, we implement a numerical algorithm and a computation criterion to simulate initiation and propagation of dynamic adiabatic shear bands (ASBs). The physical criterion is based on the hypothesis that material inside the shear band region undergoes a dynamic recrystallization process...

Significance of the actual nonlinear slope geometry for catastrophic failure in submarine landslides.

A simple approach to slope stability analysis of naturally occurring, mild nonlinear slopes is proposed through extension of shear band propagation (SBP) theory. An initial weak zone appears in the steepest part of the slope where the combined action of gravity and seismic loads overcomes the degraded peak shear resistance of the soil. If the length of this steepest part is larger than the crit...

Mechanisms of tsunami generation by submarine landslides: a short review

Wave formation and propagation due to submarine landslides are complex phenomena that may be divided into four parts: Landslide dynamics, energy transfer from landslide motion to water motion, wave propagation in open water, and wave run-up along the shores. This paper focuses on the energy transfer from landslide motion to water motion, i.e. the generation of tsunamis by submarine landslides.
